Pitching coaches say you sometimes can’t tell what a guy will have that day by how he looks warming up.

Sometimes a guy can look terrible warming up and pitch great. Sometimes a guy can look great warming up and poop the bed when he gets on the mound.

And sometimes, a guy vomits in the dug out before the game, and that’s when you can usually tell he’s not going to have his good stuff.

Jose Fernandez might have known before he took the mound Friday against the Padres that he was in for a bad day, because he did in fact vomit.

And he did in fact give up six runs including two homers as the Marlins got shelled 10-1.

“It’s not an excuse,” said Fernandez per the Miami Herald. “It probably was something I ate, but I don’t want it to be related with [how I pitched]. In the first inning I was feeling kind of shaky. But by the second and third, I was feeling, all right, back at it again.”

Fernandez is normally dominating, so for him to have a bad start, you know something must be wrong.

And if he blows chunks before even taking the mound, you can be fairly certain that he doesn’t have it that day.
