The Dallas Cowboys 16th overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft came up on Thursday night, and Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel was still on the board. Some speculated that the Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones wouldn’t be able to resist drafting the young star.

But Jones did, instead selecting Notre Dame offensive lineman Zack Martin and committing himself to Tony Romo and protecting him as he comes off his second back surgery in as many years. Former Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach applauded the decision and said the Cowboys made the right call in drafting Martin.

“I think we got a really good quarterback, and now we’re going to protect him,” Staubach said, via the Dallas Morning News. “We got another big guy there, so I think our offensive line is really going to be something special, there.”

The decision to not draft Manziel might also be in part because of their signing of Brandon Weeden.

“Obviously we think a lot of Brandon Weeden,” Stephen Jones said, via the Dallas Morning News. “He got drafted in the first round for a reason. We didn’t quite have him in the first but we had him in the second. The guy has a couple of years under his belt. We’ve kind of got to look at him over the last couple of weeks. We like what we see. That’s a work in progress.”
