Royals considering demoting Mike Moustakas

The Royals have a decision to make, and they did not anticipate having to make it.

A report out of Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star says that third baseman Mike Moustakas could be sent down to the minor leagues as KC contemplates bringing up a reliever to shore up their bullpen. The Royals have not been clicking offensively this season, most glaringly in the power department as they are dead last in all of baseball in home runs. Mike Moustakas was expected to have a breakout performance this year as a cornerstone player. He’s had anything but that in 33 games.

Over this season, Moustakas has been hitting a horrendous .147/.215/.321 with 22 strikeouts and just 4 home runs. Several Kansas City media members are astounded that his offense has been this bad and that his defense is what has been keeping him around. He was noticeably absent in Sunday’s lineup against the Mariners as Danny Valencia manned both the hot corner and the cleanup spot in the batting order – the Royals won, 9-7. Valencia went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a walk.

McCullough also says that outfielder Justin Maxwell could be a target for designation, but with Moustakas’ continued downward trend over the last two years, the possibility is strong that “Moose” could be on his way to a demotion.
