The Detroit Pistons have aggressively been pursuing Stan Van Gundy for a big role with their franchise, and it appears that they have been making some progress. According to Yahoo Sports, Van Gundy and the Pistons are nearing a deal that would name Van Gundy the team’s president of basketball operations and head coach.
Van Gundy has also met with the Golden State Warriors, but sources told Yahoo the former NBA coach was leaning towards the gig in Detroit because of the appeal of having total control of the organization.
The deal is coming along, but it is still not finalized.
“There are still some details to be worked out,” the source told Yahoo.
Detroit is reportedly considering a five-year, $35 million deal for Van Gundy.
If a deal is reached, Van Gundy, who previously coached the Miami Heat and Orlando Magic, would reportedly be interested in bringing former Magic general manager Otis Smith along for the ride in the Motor City.
We will have to wait and see how the process plays out, but it appears that the Pistons have a very good shot at landing their top target.
