Tumblr in a downward spiral

Marissa Mayer, Yahoo’s CEO of nearly two years, could be caught in quite a tough situation.  While Mayer has done well to revamp and revive many of Yahoo’s initiatives, she also was at the forefront of the $1.1 billion purchase of Tumblr a year ago.

Thanks to a report by the Wall Street Journal, some alarming information has surfaced about the social media site, Tumblr.  The number show traffic dropped from 49 million visitors in December to 42 million in March.  The 7 million visitor drop would represent 15% of traffic.

While Yahoo committed not to ruin Tumblr and change the experience, much of the site has gone unchanged since the acquisition.  While Yahoo has tried to turn Tumblr into a money-maker, advertisers have been few and far between.  A drop in visitors this drastic won’t go far in helping Yahoo capitalize on the purchase either.
