Bellator’s solution to Eddie Alvarez being forced off the Bellator pay per view was to make an interim Lightweight title fight with the former champion, Michael Chandler and the most recent Lightweight tournament winner, Will Brooks
On Monday, Alvarez was on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani and responded to earlier comments that Chandler made regarding Alvarez’s will to continue fighting. Alvarez’s response drew some ire from Bellator:
It’s laughable. He’s angry because I beat him and I’m the champion, and he has to fight for a sh—y belt that adds up to nothing. He can say whatever he wants to say.
Alvarez was quick to backtrack on his comments with this tweet yesterday:
I apologize @BellatorMMA about my comments yesterday about the interm belt , U guys been supportive thru out , my reaction was out of line

Compiling this situation with Alvarez’s already rocky relationship with Bellator, it seems that the chances that Alvarez will be on his way to the UFC after his next fight are more likely than ever.
For Bellator, the interim title may turn out in their favor. If Chandler defeats Will Brooks on Saturday, he will become the interim champion. The trilogy fight between Alvarez and Chandler would now be a unification title bout. Of course, this is all semantics but it will sell tickets.
