It would seem as if the realm of witchcraft and wizardry inhabited by the Harry Potter franchise is going to be getting just a little bit broader. Warner Bros. has announced that they will be releasing the film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them on November 18, 2016.
Now, when best-selling author J.K. Rowling completed the final Harry Potter novel Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows she said that there would be no more Harry Potter novels, and up to this point, she has stood by her word. She did, however, say that she would be open to the idea of expanding the wizarding world in other ways.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is neither a prequel nor a sequel to the Harry Potter series. Instead, it is its own standalone story that ventures into the world of the magical creatures that people like Hagrid cared for in the original series.
The film will be based on the adventures of Newt Scamander, the fictional author of the textbook that Harry Potter uses in the series. It will take a look at the many creatures that inhabit the wizarding world and the noble profession of Magizoology.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Rowling herself will be writing the screenplay for the film. This honestly comes as no surprise considering her intimate knowledge of the story and the characters. I mean, she did create them after all.
At this point, there are very few details available about the film or its production. As of right now, there is no director attached to the project; however, now that Warner Bros. has made their official announcement, it should be no time at all before the hunt will be on for someone to helm the project.
