MLB Rumors: Baltimore Orioles have not made decision on closer

Despite being tied for first in the American League with 11 saves, Baltimore Orioles closer Tommy Hunter could be close to losing his job.

After blowing his third save of the season on Tuesday night, blowing up his season ERA to an ugly 6.60, Hunter was rumored to be on the chopping block.

However manager Buck Showalter has yet to make a decision regarding Hunter’s status at closer.

Asked if Hunter would close today, Buck said “I don’t know yet. We’ll see”

By no stretch was that what you’d call a vote of confidence.

Most likely, Showalter wants to get to the ballpark where he can talk with his coaching staff along with Hunter before publicly announcing any move.

It’s possible the Orioles will continue to ride out Hunter and hope his pitching improves or they could potentially go to Darren O’Day and Zach Britton in the ninth inning, though both players come with their own set of warts as well.

So far the Orioles seemed to be having better results on the raod than at home. I would still try Hunter as closer during the upcoming road series, but then see how Darren O’Day would fare at OPACY. Just don’t know if Buck can change his mindset on having just one full-time closer.
