Ben Zobrist placed on disabled list with dislocated thumb

Already fighting to keep up in the American League East, the Tampa Bay Rays received some bad news on Thursday afternoon.

The team had to place versatile infielder Ben Zobrist on the 15-day disabled list with a dislocated left thumb. According to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times:

Rays 2B Ben Zobrist was placed on the 15-day DL due to his dislocated left thumb, and INF Cole Figueroa was called up.

Zobrist said he hopes to be back in two weeks, but it could take longer.”

Topkin also notes that manager Joe Maddon expects Zobrist to be out longer than two weeks to fully heal from the injury and get back in action.

Zobrist wasn’t off to the best start through 40 games (.260/.352/.364), but then again nobody on the Rays is exactly tearing things up right now.

Being injured will be a new experience for Zobrist: he has played at least 151 games every season since 2009. As for the Rays, they will now have to search for answers without one of their steadiest presences in the lineup. Coming off a series win against the feisty Seattle Mariners, the Rays will open an intriguing series against the Los Angeles Angels this weekend without Zobrist.
