Google didn’t start out as a company defined also as a word in the dictionary, and its email service also took some time to catch on.  Fast forward to today, and Gmail is arguably the most trusted, widely used, free internet email service on the planet.

Thanks to a post on his Google+ page, Sunday Pichai of Google, announced the Android version of the app has been installed over 1 billion times.  The official page for Gmail states the app has 1-5 billion installs.  These numbers make Gmail the second most downloaded app, behind Google Play Services, which is installed on every Android phone.

As we mentioned earlier this week, a new Gmail overhaul looks to be on the horizon, and will more than likely transition over to Android as well.

Take a trip down memory lane and check out how Gmail has changed over the years.
