Teddy Bridgewater has impressed the Minnesota Vikings enough that he will be taking first team reps at the Vikings’ organized team activities, coach Mike Zimmer said Friday, via ESPN.com.

This is a big step for Bridgewater, who will be competing with both Matt Cassel and Christian Ponder for Minnesota’s starting quarterback job this offseason.

Zimmer has openly stated that while Bridgewater is listed as third on the depth chart, he wants the former Louisville QB to get some work in with the first-team offense during OTAs, which begin on May 28.

“[Bridgewater] is throwing the ball good. I think he’s got a good presence, a good command of the way he’s taking things. It was good for him to be out here with the veteran quarterbacks a little bit last week for a few days.”

You have to wonder if this is quickly going to turn into one of those “open competitions” with no clear favorite to win the starting job.

Bridgewater has apparently been quick to pick up on new offensive coordinator Norv Turner’s offense, and has worked alongside both Cassel and Ponder during the team’s voluntary offseason workouts.

It wouldn’t be the worst bet in the world to put money on Teddy outplaying both incumbent quarterbacks this year.
