The Fantasy Baseball week gets underway on Monday with just five games on the slate, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t some pickup potential though in the starters scheduled to take the mound. Even with only 10 pitchers taking the mound, there are three who are probably on your leagues waiver wire who can help your week get off to a good start.
Almost every afternoon here on Fansided, you can find my picks for starting pitchers who are widely available and able to step in and deliver meaningful stats for your fantasy team. Check out my picks archive here where you can also set a bookmark for the daily updates. To see my recent results, check the chart on the final slide of the post. All of my choices are available in at least half of ESPN leagues, and their ownership percentage is included in parentheses. For each selection, I also include my perspective of the risk and reward for the scheduled start on a scale of 1-5 with 5 being the highest risk and the highest reward.
Here are my Monday options:
Jason Vargas-Kansas City Royals (31.6%)
Vargas takes the ball at home Monday night for the Royals as they open a three-game set with their AL Central rivals the Chicago White Sox. The White Sox will be without Juan Abreu who hit the DL Sunday, but they still have a decent offense and have surprised many people by hovering right around the .500 mark.
Vargas has also been a bit of a surprise this season to some, although he’s always been one of my favorite streaming options. He has been very good in seven of his nine starts this season allowing two runs or fewer except for those bumps in the road which came in back-to-back starts at the end of April and beginning of May. His last two starts since then, though, he’s bounced back to go 2-0 and allow just two runs on eight hits in 13.2 innings while striking out 14 and walking just one. Over the course of all his starts he’s 4-1 with a 3.00 ERA and a 1.12 WHIP. Monday’s start will be his first of the season against Chicago.
Vargas will be opposed on Monday by Scott Carroll who got off to a hot start but has struggled in his last two starts allowing 22 hits and 12 runs in nine innings against the cubs and Athletics. The Royals offense has been better at home, so hopefully they can get the runs Vargas needs to get a W.
