As if the Washington Capitals season couldn’t get any worse, they find a way to lose even when they’re thousands of miles away from hockey action. The IIHF World Championships are going on right now and Russia may have just suffered a fatal blow that will have a ripple effect across the Atlantic Ocean and to Washington D.C.

Playing in Russia’s game against Germany, Capitals star Alex Ovechkin suffered what appears to be knee injury and had to be carried off the ice.

Needless to say, the reaction to the injury didn’t help anyone hoping that this injury isn’t a serious one for Ovechkin.

No matter how serious the injury is — and it looks like it could be pretty bad — Ovechkin must now think about how this affects his 2014-15 campaign with the Capitals. If any ligaments are torn or any such damage of the sort, he could miss the opening of the season and after the year Washington just had, starting the 2014-15 season without their captain could make things hard to watch as the season begins.
