Cowboys Rumors: Is Tony Romo’s back a big concern?

Tony Romo is coming off two separate back surgeries, and is still a question mark for the Dallas Cowboys’ veteran mini-camp next month. Yet, the Cowboys didn’t go after a quarterback in the 2014 NFL Draft, so are they really concerned about Romo’s back?

According to the Dallas Morning News, the Cowboys do have a certain level of concern about their franchise quarterback, but not enough to think that he’ll be unable to perform in 2014.

“There’s some concern just from a personal level,” Cowboys’ quarterback coach Wade Wilson said. “I saw what happened with Troy [Aikman] and his back. But it’s two different injuries from what I’ve been told and that the rehab is going great and it should be fine. But it’s always a concern when you start having multiple injuries at the same spot.”

Aikman himself has expressed concern for Romo, given his own retirement at 34 due to back injuries.

Even if Romo is good to play this season, not picking up a quarterback in the draft could have been a miscalculation by the Cowboys. Right now, back up Kyle Orton is MIA, although expected to return to the team. But should Orton decide to call it a career, that leaves the Cowboys with Brandon Weeden and Caleb Hanie on the depth chart.

“We’re still hopeful that Kyle will be here, but if he doesn’t, we feel really good about Brandon, especially since he’s going through our offseason program.” said Wilson.
