As a guest on ESPN’s First Take, Philadelphia Eagles running back LeSean McCoy made the declaration that he thinks he is the best back in football.
Well, full disclosure, McCoy was actually asked the question of whether he thought he was the NFL’s best back, and he replied with confirmation. But either way, this is hardly a foolish statement as the argument could easily be made for him being number one.
While Adrian Peterson is often thought of as a workhorse, every-down back, McCoy doesn’t get the label perhaps because of the offense he plays in. His numbers though have been just as impressive as Peterson’s. But being the best back comes down to more than yardage totals. In today’s NFL, running backs must catch passes, pick up blitz coverage and do all the little things that don’t show up when debating who the offensive player of the year might be.
It also might be worth mentioning that McCoy has been playing on a much better and more balanced offense these past few years than Peterson has. Defenses game-plan to stop AP, while they simply try to contain McCoy within the Eagles’ system. That’s not to say Peterson should win this discussion because of it, but it’s another factor that should be considered.
Also worth considering: Shady McCoy has the much better nickname. That has to count for something.
