Tampa Bay Rays option Brandon Gomes to Triple-A Durham

The Tampa Bay Rays will open up a six game home series starting with the Oakland Athletics on Tuesday and ending with the Boston Red Sox on Sunday. After that, the Rays will hit the road on Memorial Day to kick off a road trip beginning with the Toronto Blue Jays.

But before the Rays get set to host the 2013 American League West division champions, they have decided to make a couple roster moves. Tampa Bay has decided to option right-handed relief pitcher Brandon Gomes to Triple-A Durham today according to Marc Topkin on Twitter.

Gomes has posted a 4.91 ERA over 20 relief appearances with the Rays this season. Topkins notes that the Rays will keep outfielder Kevin Kiermaier for now, who is in his rookie year.

Kiermaier has one home run with two RBI’s and a slow batting line of .182/.182/.455 across the line in just 11 at-bats with the big league club. His glove is the main reason why he’s still on the active roster.
