The Washington Nationals sent Stephen Strasburg to the mound on Monday night to open their series against the Cincinnati Reds. Tied up in a pitcher’s duel in the early innings, Strasburg got some help from catcher Wilson Ramos on this diving catch in foul territory.
This play is made even more impressive by the fact that it sent the speedy and disruptive Billy Hamilton back to the dugout. Especially against an offensively challenged team like the Reds, this play has extra value in keeping one of the fastest players in the league off the bases.
Thus far in 2014 the Nationals have been treading water to the tune of a 23-20 record. With continued injuries and uncertainty in store for the near future, they will need to continue those efforts to keep themselves afloat in the standings until they can go on another run.
That is not to take a winning streak like the one they went on near the end of 2013 for granted, but this does look like a team poised to make another run with good health. The return of Ramos was one important piece of that puzzle, something he showed with this great play.
