Godzilla Topples the Box Office Over the Weekend Earning the Top Spot

The King of Monsters certainly knows how to make an entrance! Over the weekend, the latest installation in the storied Godzilla franchise came storming into theaters and literally obliterated everything in its path.

Godzilla brought in $93.2 million over the weekend. This monster-sized haul is over double what the film of the same name that some of us refuse to acknowledge ever happened made back in 1998. Even more impressive, it is almost four times the nearest competition over the weekend.

Falling one spot into the second position is the new comedy Neighbors starring Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne. Neighbors drew in $25.1 million over the weekend, bringing the film’s two week domestic total to $90.6 million.

Shifting down one spot into the third position is the struggling superhero film The Amazing Spider-Man 2. The second installation in the most recent Spider-Man saga brought in $16.8 million over the weekend, bringing its three week domestic total to $172.2 million.

The film has performed significantly better in the foreign market. Thus far, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has brought in $461 million since the film’s release. This gives The Amazing Spider-Man 2 a worldwide gross of $633 million.

Coming in fourth over the weekend is the newest live action effort from Walt Disney entitled Million Dollar Arm, which brought in $10.5 million over the weekend.. The film is based on a true story, and stars Mad Men actor Jon Hamm as J.B. Bernstein, a sports agent who uses unconventional methods to convince Indian Cricket Players to come to America and play Major League Baseball.

Finishing off the Top 5 this week is the comedy The Other Woman. The film brought in $6.3 million over the weekend, which raises the film’s four week domestic gross to $71.6 million.

Godzilla is going to meet with some serious competition next week. The upcoming mutant adventure X-Men: Days of Future Past releases in theaters nationwide on Friday. It is going to be a well-fought battle for the top spot. Will the King of Monsters remain atop his throne or will there be a new number one in town? I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
