Coming in to the 2014 NFL Draft, it was very likely that the New York Giants were going to look in the direction of wide receiver and that’s exactly what they did in the first round with the 12th overall pick, selecting LSU wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.

Behind Sammy Watkins and Mike Evans, there were many that considered Beckham the next best prospect at the position. If there was one knock on him, though, it was his size. Beckham only measures at about 5-11 which concerned some.

But it doesn’t concern Beckham himself. He knows that the criticism about his size is there, but to deflect some of that, he pointed to the success of the Seattle Seahawks’ all-everything speedster, Percy Harvin, who also lacks the height that some scouts look for.

“It’s something I don’t really think about,” Beckham told ESPN.com. “There are a lot of guys in the league my size. Percy Harvin is one of them. Maybe he’s a little faster than I am, but he’s been successful. Size is not something that matters, I don’t think.”

The two players are actually pretty similar, except for the fact that Harvin could be used out of the backfield a lot more than Beckham could. Other than that, though, they are both outstanding pass-catchers and are deadly in the return game as well.

With the way offenses are spreading out in today’s NFL world, size doesn’t matter nearly as much as it used to. Still a factor, yes, but when you’re a player with the assets that Beckham has and can separate from defenders, you have a bright future ahead of you.
