Robert Lewandowski chose Bayern Munich to win titles

On Saturday Bayern Munich defeated their Bundesliga rival Borussia Dortmund in the final of the German Cup. Last spring Bayern beat Dortmund in the Champions League final as well. The German Cup’s result wasn’t without controversy however.

In the second half it looked like Dortmund’s Mats Hummels had scored on a header, replays make it look like the ball crossed the line. Bayern’s Dante cleared the ball on or behind the line though, and the goal wasn’t awarded. Had it been awarded Dortmund would’ve won, but instead the game went to extra time.

“If that goal from Dortmund was awarded, it would have changed everything,” Munich boss Pep Guardiola said, via the Guardian.

In extra time a pair of goals from Arjen Robben and Thomas Müller gave Bayern the win. It is the club’s second title for the 2013-14 having won the Bundesliga title earlier in May, following the treble from last season.

Arguably Dortmund’s best player, striker Robert Lewandowski has agreed to a transfer to Bayern Munich this summer, crossing enemy lines in the process. Dortmund fans aren’t necessarily thrilled and even left his Porsche on bricks outside his house. He won’t win any fans over with his latest comments saying he chose Bayern to pursue and win titles.

“It’s got to be my goal to win and collect titles,” Lewandowski told Germany’s Bild newspaper, via Sky Sports. “I’m certainly going to have better chances with Bayern.”

Even if the fans won’t forgive him for leaving and going to Bayern, he’ll always have fond memories of his time with the club.

“It was a fantastic time which I will never forget,” Lewandowski said. “But the time had come for me to take the next step.

“Dortmund have always been capable of signing good players after others leave and I’m sure they will do that again.

“Dortmund are going to be challengers again next season, I’m certain of that.”
