The Boston Red Sox went out on Tuesday and signed 31-year-old free agent shortstop Stephen Drew, this just months after he turned down a one-year, $14 million qualifying offer from the world champions following the 2013 season. The deal is pro-rated, according to Jon Heyman from CBS, meaning the dollar figure is estimated at about $10 million.

So now the question immediately turns into how quickly Drew can get back on the field for the Red Sox, and according to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe, it’ll be a little more quickly than some had expected as he’ll be a member of the active roster on Wednesday.

Last season in the team’s run to the World Series title, Drew batted .253 with 13 home runs and 67 RBI while being one of the more consistent defensive shortstops in the league.

It’s also expected that he will eventually move back into the role of starter at the position, meaning that Xander Bogaerts will more than likely be moving over to third base to complete the new infield for the Sox.
