The welterweight division in the Ultimate Fighting Championship is as wide open as ever since former champion Georges St-Pierre decided to take an indefinite hiatus from the sport, and now the promotion has an intriguing bout in the weight class that they are targeting for their return to China.
According to a report from Wednesday night’s edition of UFC Tonight, the UFC is planning a welterweight match up between Hector Lombard and Dong Hyun “Stun Gun” Kim for the UFC Fight Night card on August 23 that will be taking place in Macau.
The bout will undoubtedly be the toughest fight of Kim’s career inside of the UFC cage.
Kim (19-2-1, 1 NC) has won four straight fights with two incredible knockout victories over Erick Silva and John Hathaway. Lombard (34-4-1, 1NC), meanwhile, has won just two fights in a row with the most recent win being the fight that caused former Strikeforce champion Jake Shields to be released from the UFC.
There is no exact word on the broadcast plans for UFC Fight Night China nor is their word about the official main event, but it is expected that the promotion will be planning a bigger main event than Lombard vs. Stun Gun for the event.
If those plans don’t come to fruition and Lombard vs. Kim ends up being the headliner, it is a very solid bout that could carry one of the smaller Fight Night cards.
