I don’t know a lot about pitching, but I do know that for the most part you want to retain feeling in all of your limbs at all times. Loss of feeling in any part of the body is a sign that said body part could be about to break down on you.

The Red Sox’ Felix Doubront experienced the fear that comes with unexpected and sudden loss of feeling in a body part in the second inning of Tuesday’s game between Boston and Toronto. Doubront was in the process of walking Dioner Navarro when he says he noticed something funny about his shoulder.

And it was all downhill from there. Soon, Doubront couldn’t even tell if the shoulder was there anymore.

“I couldn’t feel my shoulder,” Doubront said per WEEI. “It was weird. I felt weird.”

Doubront’s ability to grip the baseball slowly disappeared after the loss of sensation in his shoulder, and his velocity declined as a result. By his final inning of work, his fastball was down to 88 MPH, still well above the Moyer-line but not acceptable for a man who generally gets it up there over 90.

Doubront says he’d never experienced anything like that before and, understandably, he was concerned.

“That was the first time,” Doubront said. “That’s why I tried to call [pitching coach] Juan [Nieves] and explain to him what was the situation.”

Doubront will undergo an MRI, hoping to find an explanation for his incredible disappearing shoulder.
