In a release posted on Sony’s Playstation Blog, SingStar Game Director Chris Bruce, brings some exciting information to fans of the popular karaoke gaming franchise.

Of note, Bruce details that today, SingStar turns 10 years old, and in those ten years, the franchise has sold over 26 million copies.  In 2007, the game series launched the SingStar store, giving players the ability to have a much wider array of music options at their disposal.  Considering the success of streaming services such as Pandora and Beats Music, the incorporation of such a system into a karaoke game only makes sense.

In an exciting change of pace, Bruce announced that SingStar will be coming to the PlayStation 4 this year.  While the game has seen considerable success on the past generation console, it has yet to be seen how it will be received on the PlayStation 4.

SingStar will also move away from requiring users to hold a microphone for the new version of the game.  In his post, Bruce announced the game will also launch an app for smartphones that will allow users to utilize their phone as the microphone for the game.  In doing so, the extra peripheral will no longer be necessary.

The app will function with both the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 version of the SingStar game and will have enhanced features outside of microphone functionality.  The app will be accessible on both smartphones and tablets and will allow users to create playlists for the game as well.

SingStar is continuing to strive to appeal to the social aspect that the game offers as well.  With karaoke being an activity that appeals to multiple people, SingStar is enhancing the functionality of sharing moments of the game through social media.  Integration with Twitter and Facebook straight from the game is something that is one the horizon for the newest offering.

While the game has yet to receive a release date, with this much information, it seems as though things are in full swing.  Check out SingStar on the Playstation 4 in the coming months.
