It was an ugly loss for the Phillies. There’s no other way to put it.

Kyle Kendrick tried to put it into words. They ended up being words about his performance however, as he took the loss in a 14-5 clobbering of the persistently underperforming Phillies by the Marlins. The game started out promisingly enough for Philadelphia, producing two runs off of Nathan Eovaldi. Kendrick could not hold the lead for longer than a third of an inning. From there, it was just a barrage of singles, doubles and walks that did Kendrick in. The righty, who is scheduled to be a free agent at the end of the season, attributed his problems to his first inning struggles.

"“That needs to be fixed,” Kendrick said. “I don’t have a reason for why it’s happened but it needs to be fixed and it needs to be fixed soon. Guys put up two runs for me and I go out and do that [stuff]. It’s just bad. It needs to stop.”"

Kendrick’s first inning struggles have led to an 0-10 record dating back to August of last year. He hasn’t earned a win in 16 starts. He entered Wednesday’s game against Miami with a 10-game winning streak against them, but that was dashed as he just could not find his rhythm and struggled with control.

The game got out of hand after a Marcell Ozuna grand slam, and Matt Gelb of the Philly Inquirer says that shortstop Reid Brignac may have had a chance to pitch in the game had Luis Garcia not escaped the eighth inning.
