The infamous long-standing rivalry between comedian Will Ferrell and his lookalike, Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith, finally reached its zenith Thursday night on The Tonight Show when the two did battle…not with fists or guns or nuclear bombs, but with drum sticks.
Slapping the skins, I believe it’s called. And oh these two warriors did slap the skins. They slapped them mercilessly, and in rhythm.
For a time the seemingly overmatched Ferrell miraculously held his own with professional rock and roll drumming deity Smith, until it seemed Smith had finally vanquished him with a solo that, in musical parlance, kicked all of the ass most truly and righteously.
But like the great warrior he is, Ferrell saved his kick-assiest move for last, and plucked sweet luscious percussion-y victory from the jaws of defeat.
I think we’ve settled once and for all the question of who is the greater percussionist. Chad Smith may be slightly better at the drums than Ferrell, but it’s not all about the drums.
Chad Smith has spent so much time learning the drums that he’s neglected the most important percussion instrument of all. That was his ultimate downfall. He ignored the cowbell.
