Watch Dogs: Factions play an integral role

Ubisoft will be releasing Watch Dogs soon, and so far everything we’ve seen about the game deals with how interconnected the city of Chicago is.

However, another important aspect are the people in the city as well. Aiden Pearce will be involved with various factions throughout the story.

There are three groups – the hacker collective DedSec; the violent, but highly organized Black Viceroys; and the cryptic Blume Corporation  – that interact and can have a direct impact with Aiden’s story, including the citizens of Chicago.

The Lead Writer Kevin Shortt talked about these factions with the UbiBlog.

DedSec

As the Blume Corporation launched the ctOS, this group of hackers informed the people of Chicago about the dangers of a new hyper-connected system.

They plan to use ctOS to show information has power. “I think ultimately they would like to shut down the system and expose the backdoors for the world to see,” Shortt said about DedSec’s goals.

Aiden doesn’t see them as a problem, but more as a means to an end.

“Being a skilled hacker, Aiden can take advantage of DedSec’s exploits and really dig in to the ctOS much more than they ever could before,” Shortt explains. “They know he’s a good hacker and they’re hoping if they give him these exploits they can eventually come back to him and say Look, we helped you get in there. Now it’s your turn to help us. We need to get inside. Because they aren’t fully inside ctOS. They just found ways to exploit the system a little bit.”

The Blume Corporation

This is a group that isn’t evil, and neither is ctOS. Blume wants to create a smarter world where people go about their daily lives.

“Within Blume there are people who have other plans,” Shortt says. “There’s one thing that comes up in the game that peaks Pearce’s interest early on. I won’t say much, but there’s a program in the ctOS and you’ll see it but you won’t be sure what it means. It wasn’t needed to run the system, so why was it inserted into the ctOS?”

These two groups are somewhat gray. “DedSec is seen as an irritant, but there are those in the city who understand what they are doing. Blume is making people’s lives better, but the shadows in the company are causing folks to take notice. But not all groups in Watch Dogs are as ambiguous, Shortt mentions.”

The Black Viceroys

As the city gets smarter so does crime, and the leader of the Black Viceroys is very smart. Anthony “Iraq” Wade returned from military service with a clear plan for the future of his gang.

Pearce realizes later in the game that he needs something the Black Viceroys have,” Shortt says. “He’s basically going to have to poke a stick at them and annoy them to get what he wants. That obviously creates some pretty major conflict.”

Each of the factions will play a role in the journey that Aiden has, and it will be interesting what choices players make.
