Boston Red Sox roster moves: Ryan Lavarnway called up

In light of Mike Napoli going on the DL, the Boston Red Sox have made some roster moves. Catcher Ryan Lavarnway has been promoted to the major leagues, and pitcher Alex Wilson has been optioned to Triple-A-Pawtucket.

The news may come as a surprise, as, naturally, with first baseman Napoli on the DL, it was thought the Red Sox would call up either a first baseman or left fielder – given that Mike Carp can play first base.

However, with the Red Sox playing a three game series against the Atlanta Braves in Atlanta, David Ortiz will play first base and there will be no designated hitter.

Originally, manager John Farrell told the Boston Globe, “The fact is we needed to keep the added bullpen arm. Mike is still a few days away. Giving him some ample time with the finger. Hopefully this gives him that extended period of time to get past this in its entirety. Or at least to try to get further ahead of it.”

Brandon Workman, who was originally called up, will stay on the roster.
