Gerard Pique signs new contract with FC Barcelona

FC Barcelona have inked their reliable center-back, Gerard Pique, to a five-year contract extension, which will keep the 27-year-old with the Catalan giants until June 2019.

The team’s president, Josep Maria Bartomeu, wasn’t hesitant to celebrate the extension by raining praise over Pique.

“It is very important to consolidate Gerard Pique at Barcelona,” Bartomeu said, via The Mirror. “He is the best center back in the world and a core part of the new project here.”

Barcelona are going into the season looking to make significant changes, with a lot of players on the transfer list. The team is also expected to get stronger at the back, but Pique is clearly part of the club’s long-term plans.

Following the tragic death of Tito Vilanova, Barcelona will be led by new boss Luis Enrique, who will hope to bring the team back to its glory after a season without any titles.

Pique himself says that he is looking forward to working with Enrique and thinks that he is the right man to lead the team to future titles.

“I am very excited,” Pique said.

“He knows this place well and I think he’ll do a lot of good for us. I am really looking forward to working under him. Barcelona has to be at the top, winning titles and feeling important among the elite of European and world football.

“We have a team, and a coach (and) all the ingredients to get back where we belong.”

Since Pique returned to Barcelona following a four-year stint with Manchester United, he has helped the team to multiple league titles and two Champions League trophies.
