Mets Dillon Gee suffers setback
By Matt Fisher
The Mets are going to be without their ace for a bit longer.
It was reported on Sunday by Greg Logan of Newsday that the Mets’ Opening Day starter had to cancel a bullpen session because of discomfort. Gee has been on the disabled list since May 11 with a right lat muscle injury.
"Mets general manager Sandy Alderson acknowledged that his tentative June 5 return date from the disabled list is “not realistic.” Alderson said Gee did not feel comfortable enough to attempt the bullpen session."
Adam Rubin of ESPN New York is in attendance at a pre-game media session and manager Terry Collins has admitted to there being some concern with Gee’s injury. Luckily for the Mets, pitchers like Jacob deGrom have been filling in admirably in his absence. deGrom, who will be starting against Pittsburgh on Memorial Day, may have an 0-2 record, but has only given up four runs in his two starts. In his debut contest during the Subway Series, he was a hard-luck, 1-0 loser as he went seven innings strong against the Yankees. Against the Dodgers, he went six innings, giving up three runs.
Gee made ten starts before landing on the disabled list. During that time, he has been lowering his ERA to 2.73 while compiling a 3-1 record over 52.2 innings. The most runs he has given up in any start this year is 4, which indicates that the no-decisions and losses come either from a defense with holes in it or a bullpen that doesn’t have a good track record.
Gee, at this point, could be pushed back to the end of June. If the Mets want to play it very conservatively, they could hold Gee out until after the All-Star break.
