Scott won the Crowne Plaza in a sudden death playoff against Jason Dufner, another Titleist man. It was one heck of a playoff, and I’m sure the sponsors enjoyed the extra airtime.
The playoff was the most exciting of the year because two high profile names did not back down from each other. After they both parred the first playoff hole (no. 18), they hit the fairway with their drives on the second playoff hole (no. 17).
Scott hit his approach into no. 17 green first, and started saying, “be right.” The shot ended 20-feet past the pin, just onto the fringe. Dufner hit next, and stuffed his approach to four-feet, advantage Duff daddy.
Scott lined up his putt, and sank the 20-footer like the world no. 1 he is, and Dufner calmly rolled in his birdie to extend the playoff back to no. 18. This time, it was all Scott who took advantage of a poor approach by Dufner by hitting it to eight-feet below the hole. Dufner missed his 30-footer for birdie, and Scott made his birdie putt for the win. What a match!
Dufner has not played well this season, so he can take a few positives from a good week of golf. Scott solidified his position as the world no. 1, and looks forward to many more Ws and weeks at the top.
