After suffering through a losing season in the Pac-12 in 2013, the Utah Utes clearly need to upgrade their talent.

Head coach Kyle Wittingham and the Utes took a big step towards doing just that on Tuesday when they landed a commitment from 3-star wide receiver Justice Murphy. The 6’1, 185-pound Murphy is from Vancover, Washington and attends Evergreen High School.

Murphy has considered the Utes a favorite to land him for some time.

“I started following them about five years ago. Really got into them. I saw Steve Smith came out of there, and he’s pretty much one of my idols,” Murphy said via Nick Daschel of The Oregonian.

Murphy’s coach, Don Johnson, announced the commitment.

According to Daschel, Utes’ offensive coordinator Dave Christensen came to Vancover to offer Murphy on Tuesday and he committed almost immediately.

Murphy is ranked as the country’s 143rd-best wide receiver prospect, the 13th-best overall prospect in the state of Washington and the 1,164th-best overall prospect in the class of 2015, according to 24/7 Sports’ composite rankings.

He chose the Utes over offers from the Eastern Washington Eagles, Idaho Vandals, Montana Grizzlies, Montana State Bobcats, Wyoming Cowboys. He was also drawing interest from the Boise State Broncos and Oregon Ducks.
