NBA Draft 2014: Patric Young to work out for Phoenix Suns and San Antonio Spurs

In the midst of the NBA Draft process, Florida Gators big man Patric Young seemingly isn’t a key cog to the majority of discussions. After all, Young was the very rare commodity of a four-year player in college, and while he was once considered a lottery-type prospect, his stock has fallen with regard to the majority of “big boards” and mock drafts at this point. However, Young will reportedly work out for two extremely intelligent organizations this week, as he meets with the Phoenix Suns and San Antonio Spurs.

ESPN’s Jeff Goodman reports that the 6-foot-8 Young will be in Phoenix on Wednesday and San Antonio on Friday, and because of the names associated with these organizations, it is certainly noteworthy. At this point, ESPN ranks Young as the #3 center and #34 overall prospect in this class, while Draft Express projects the big man to the Denver Nuggets with the 41st overall pick in the draft.

Obviously, the lottery dreams for a player like Young are virtually gone at this stage, but that doesn’t mean he can’t be a very productive player at the next level. From day one, Patric Young would be an asset in rebounding and on the defensive end for any club, and for a team drafting at the bottom of the first round (i.e. a playoff-bound team), that could be extremely valuable, even when sacrificing some dreamy “upside”.

It remains to be seen where Young will land, but don’t be surprised if he’s an impactful player from day one in the NBA.
