The UFC is apparently trying to avoid another Will Chope situation by rolling out brand new detailed background checks.
According to a report from MMAJunkie, the UFC sent out a questionnaire this past week to managers of UFC fighters. The questionnaire asks about the fighters medical history, schooling, and their criminal history as well.
The questionnaire is to be filled out by both new and current UFC fighters regardless of how long they have been with the organization.
Michael Mersch, the UFC senior vice president of business and legal affairs, was quoted on the questionnaire:
Zuffa LLC requires its contracted fighters to act in a legal and responsible manner and avoid conduct detrimental to the integrity of the UFC organization. As the UFC’s highest profile independent contractors and as ambassadors of the sport of mixed martial arts, UFC fighters are held to a high standard by Zuffa, the media and the public.
It is important for Zuffa to be fully informed of your background in order to evaluate and potentially assist on matter that may be detrimental to the integrity of the UFC organization
The UFC has been collecting this type of information on it’s fighters for years, but for the first time the entire background check is in one document.
As the UFC moves closer towards the mainstream everyday, the organization wants to avoid any potential issues or a PR disaster. With this new thorough background check, it will help the UFC make better decisions as to who is allowed to step into the Octagon and represent the UFC as a brand.
