The Florida Gators received a significant commitment late Friday afternoon as four-star athlete Derrick Dillon (Franklinton, La. Pine) became the eighth verbal commitment for Florida’s 2015 class.

Dillon ranks as the No. 147 player overall, No. 11 athlete and the No. 7 player in the state of Louisiana, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings. Dillon picked the Gators over offers from Florida State, UCLA, Texas A&M, Mississippi State, Notre Dame, Tennessee and LSU, among others.
It isn’t often that LSU loses an in-state player they want, but the Bayou Bengals offered the in-state prospect as a cornerback and Dillon wanted the ball in his hands in college.
The 5-11, 180-pound Dillon has lined up at a number of positions for his high school team, including quarterback and cornerback, but Florida recruited him to Gainesville as a slot receiver where his explosiveness and change of direction skills will translate well in Kurt Roper’s up-tempo offense and he could see some limited time in the backfield as well.
Sounds like how the Gators deployed Percy Harvin, right?
That will be the easy comparison to make with Dillon, but it’s premature to say he will have that type of impact with Florida, but he is a dangerous player with the ball in his hands and if he gets in space, it’s over for the defense.
Dillon passed for 791 yards and seven touchdowns, ran for 1,926 yards and 26 touchdowns on 170 attempts and recorded 29 tackles, three interceptions, two forced fumbles and one defensive touchdown last season as a junior.
With the commitment of Dillon, Will Muschamp’s team moved up six spots in the 247Sports class rankings and are now at No. 21 in the nation and No. 10 in the SEC.
