Cardinals’ Oscar Taveras hits home run for first Major League hit (Video)

The San Francisco Giants may have the best record in Major League Baseball, but not even they could cool down the fire that uber prospect Oscar Tavares brings with him.

After San Francisco took the first two games of their four game set with the Cardinals, St. Louis decided to call up their top offensive prospect who made a bang during his professional debut – literally.

After being retired by Yusmeiro Petit during his first at-bat, Taveras stepped to the plate in the bottom of the fifth inning with the score tied at 0-0.

Heavy rains driving into the face of the rookie, Taveras unleashed a mammoth swing sending the ball into the right center field seats.

The pitch from Petit, a low slider, entered the wheelhouse of Taveras who had no doubts that his bomb was going to clear the fence, slowly trotting out the box as his first Major League hit was of the home run variety.

Taveras, smile on his face, returned to the St. Louis Cardinals dugout where he was greeted by a lineup of teammates who all rushed to give the rookie a high five before he rushed up the steps to receive a curtain call from the ecstatic Cardinals crowd.

But the excitement was short lived as just mere moments after the home run, the driving rain storm halted play, sending the crowd rushing for cover and the players off the field.
