The New York Knicks still remain without a coach heading into the month of June, but the search is making progress as the team looks for the right candidate as the draft approaches.

More from NBA

Phil Jackson has considered several individuals from within his own inner circle during his historic tenures with the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers and the most commonly linked name to the job from his background would be former Lakers and current Oklahoma City Thunder point guard Derek Fisher. Fisher is still preoccupied with the playoffs as the Thunder face elimination, but that isn’t stopping his name from being a hot topic for the Knicks position.

Phil Jackson commented on Fisher’s candidacy for the job, which Marc Berman of the New York Post transcribed.

"“I kind of know what he wants to do and his feelings. He’s got a family in L.A. He’s got little kids in L.A. I have no idea if he wants to move his family and come here. There’s so many unknowns. He’s definitely a person on my list who could be a very good candidate for this job.”"

The conclusion of Oklahoma City’s season will allow for any discussions to pick up between the New York Knicks and Derek Fisher. The Knicks still have other candidates in mind, including the possibility of Mark Jackson, and they may decide to go in another direction before Fisher gets a chance to interview.

If Fisher is hired, he would be the second recent hiring to a head coaching position following retirement, with Jason Kidd starting the trend last summer by taking the Brooklyn Nets’ opening shortly after his final season with the Knicks.
