You guys are never going to believe this, but they have uncovered evidence that bribes were paid in exchange for Qatar being awarded the 2022 World Cup. I mean, this is just shocking stuff. Who could have ever seen this coming? Not me, that’s for sure.

But alas, it seems that FIFA officials accepted somewhere around $5 million in exchange for voting for Qatar.

From Pro Soccer Talk via England’s Sunday Times

A report published in England’s Sunday Times alleges FIFA officials accepted payments of around $5m in exchange for supporting Qatar’s bid to host the 2022 World Cup. The allegations are based on millions of secret documents that are said to outline how former Qatari football official Mohamed Bin Hammam bought other officials’ votes.

FIFA’s chief investigator, Michael Garcia, has already been investigating the possibility of impropriety with regards to the 2022 elections. He is set to meet with officials from the Qatar 2022 organizing committee on Monday.

Qatar has such a rich soccer history and a perfect climate for a international soccer competition that takes place in the middle of the summer. Plus their country’s laws fit in perfectly with the culture surrounding soccer fandom. I’m absolutely shocked they would need to bribe FIFA officials in order to get the World Cup awarded to their country.

I’m sure there is a lot more information that will come out in the near future that shows this was all just a big misunderstanding and Qatar rightfully won the World Cup. Just wait, you’ll see.
