The Pittsburgh Pirates have dealt RHP Bryan Morris to the Miami Marlins in exchange for Miami’s 39th overall draft pick, reports Juan Rodriguez of the Sun-Sentinel. The pick was Miami’s competitive balance round A compensatory pick.

More from Miami Marlins

Morris was 4-0 in 21 relief appearances for the Pirates, posting a 3.80 ERA in 23.2 innings with a WHIP of 1.563.

This is the third trade of draft picks involving the Marlins since MLB instituted its competitive balance draft picks system (regular draft picks still can’t be traded). In 2013, Miami dealt Gaby Sanchez and Kyle Kaminska to Pittsburgh for Gorkys Hernandez plus the Pirates’ 35th overall pick. They also swapped picks with the Tigers as part of the Anibal Sanchez deal.

Morris gives Miami another nice bullpen arm as they continue their somewhat surprising run to relevance in the NL East. The Pirates meanwhile might be showing signs that they are thinking about throwing in the towel in the NL Central where they currently trail the Brewers by 7.5 games.

Not that this means the Pirates will necessarily become all-out sellers, but you know how the Pirates are. They’re going to hedge their bets when it comes to going for it now or building for the future. Miami on the other hand seems like they are just going to go for it, and why not? There is no dominant team in their division and they have some talent.
