New York Rangers backup goalie Cam Talbot missed practice on Sunday with an undisclosed injury. Without elaborating further, Rangers coach Alain Vigneault announced that Talbot will be considered day to day. An unfortunate timing for an injury. Hopefully it is nothing too serious and Talbot will be able to make it to the Stanley Cup Finals.
The Rangers third string goalie, David Leneveu, skated during practice along with starting goalie Henrik Lundqvist. This was the first practice the club held since advancing to the Stanley Cup Finals with a 1-0 win against the Montreal Canadiens in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals.
With a few more days of rest ahead of them, Talbot has some time to rest and rehab depending on the extent of the injury. Being day to day is a good sign that he will likely return for the start of the finals.
Talbot has played twice in relief of Lundqvist so far in the series, however Lundqvist is the obvious starter in such important games. If Talbot does not return before Game 1, Leneveu will likely not see any ice time.
The Rangers will play either the Chicago Blackhawks or the Los Angeles Kings during the Stanley Cup Finals. The answer to which team will advance will be decided Sunday night in Game 7 of the Western Conference Finals.
Game 1 of the Stanley Cup will be Wednesday, June 4.
In addition to Talbot, Rangers forward J.T. Miller also missed practice with an upper body injury. He did skate afterwards, a good sign that he is recovering nicely.
