The Toshiba Classic is the most charitable event on the Champions Tour, and it will be moving from March to October beginning in 2015. The 21st edition of the Toshiba Classic will be played October 19-25, 2015, and the tournament is now the final event before the Charles Schwab Cup Championship. Players will have extra incentive to play well at the Toshiba so they are in the best position to win the season-long Charles Schwab Cup Points race. The winner of the race earns a million dollar bonus.
The 2014 Toshiba Classic was a spectacular event with eight World Golf Hall of Famers in the field: Tom Watson, Fred Couples, Colin Montgomerie, Ben Crenshaw, Curtis Strange, Hale Irwin, Sandy Lyle, and Bernhard Langer. The Hall of Famers brought a buzz to the tournament with Couples birdieing the final two holes to beat Monty, Langer, and Steve Pate by one-stroke.
Newport Beach Country Club hosts the event, and I would highly recommend attending the Toshiba if you live in Southern California. The course is spectator-friendly, and allows for action-packed golf. You never know who is going to rocket up the leaderboard with a low round. Tom Watson shot an eight-under 63 in the second round, and Montgomerie almost won the tournament with a nine-under 62 in the final round.
The Toshiba Classic is also a great event for the surrounding community with an estimated economic impact of $28 million.
