Since the day Phil Jackson was hired as president of the New York Knicks, Oklahoma City Thunder point guard Derek Fisher’s name has come up in connection with the job.

More from NBA

After Steve Kerr decided to pass on the Knicks’ job to take over the Golden State Warriors, Fisher became the front-runner for the job. Jackson virtually stopped his coaching staff to wait for Fisher’s season to come to an end (although that didn’t stop him from tampering with Fisher for which he was fined $25,000 on Monday).

According to sources of Marc Stein and Ramon Shelburne of ESPN.com, Jackson and Fisher are set to meet to discuss the job.

"Phil Jackson’s first substantive chat with Derek Fisher about the New York Knicks’ coaching job is scheduled to take place later this week, according to sources close to the situation.Sources told ESPN.com that Jackson is planning to connect with Fisher by week’s end after giving the Oklahoma City Thunder guard some time to decompress after his team was eliminated Saturday night in Game 6 of the Western Conference finals. One source cautioned that the discussion shouldn’t be classified as a formal interview, given the long and close working relationship between Jackson and Fisher over their two stints together as coach and player with the Los Angeles Lakers. But another source close to the process told ESPN.com that he thinks Fisher will ultimately find the allure of coaching in New York under Jackson too difficult to pass up."

Obviously, Fisher has never been a coach but has played in 1,281 games, was president of the Player’s Union and won five titles as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers under Jackson.
