Confident that they can still be contenders despite the loss of staff ace Jose Fernandez, the Marlins have already made two moves this week to bolster their pitching staff while they are reportedly eyeing an even splashier move to improve their roster.
After acquiring Bryan Morris in a trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Marlins came to terms with veteran right-handed reliever Kevin Gregg on a deal. According to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports:
The move was set up by the trade for Morris.
Joe Frisaro and Maria Torres of MLB.com provided the following details on the move:
"MLB.com has confirmed that Miami has reached an agreement on a Minor League contract with the veteran reliever, pending completion of his physical, which could come as early as Tuesday. The Marlins have not confirmed the deal."
Gregg rebounded from a couple tough years in Baltimore in 2011 and 2012 to pitch well for the Chicago Cubs last season. In 62 appearances he posted a 3.48 ERA and an 8.1 K/9 mark. Because the Marlins don’t need him to close (Steve Cishek has that role nailed down), this stands to be a solid though unspectacular move.
