Charlie Whitehurst is still riding the bench in the NFL, moving from team to team trying to find his spot to be a backup or third string quarterback in the highly competitive league.

More from NFL

Whitehurst joined the Tennessee Titans this offseason in hopes of getting the backup job. When he came over to the team, the No. 6 he had been wearing in San Diego was being used by punter Brett Kern.

Instead of Whitehurst taking Kern out to dinner, or paying for a family vacation in order to attain the number, the two men engaged in a arm wrestling match with the winner claiming the No. 6 jersey.

Well, Whitehurst lost and made headlines when he posted an Instagram photo explaining the situation. Of course a quarterback losing to a punter in any sort of arm competition will bring ridicule from the fans.

Now a week later, Kern and Whitehurst are claiming that is was all a joke and a hoax. In fact, Whitehurst spoke to Pro Football Talk about the imaginary arm wrestling match he made up:

"It all happened so fast. I don’t remember what motivated me to do it, but I think it was kind of like, ‘Hey, this looks pretty good. It was a 30-second thought. I didn’t think anybody took me that serious."

While fans will never truly know whether or not the arm wrestling match actually occurred, we do know that Whitehurst has effectively had his fill for newsworthy headlines for the rest of the season. That is of course barring an actual televised arm wrestling match between Kern and Whitehurst, because who wouldn’t want to see that?
