There has been plenty of discussion about who will be next in line for Jon Jones’ UFC light heavyweight championship. Jones has not been thrilled about the idea of a rematch with No. 1 contender Alexander Gustafsson, but Jones may just be out of luck.
As far as UFC president Dana White is concerned, Gustafsson is the top challenger for the title and it will remain that way whether Jones likes it or not.
“Gustafsson’s next in line,” White said, via MMAFighting.com.com.
“Even Cormier said, ‘Listen, I hope this whole things works out for me and I get the shot, but even I believe that Gustafsson deserves the next shot.’ [Gustafsson is] the No. 1 contender, he’s waited for this rematch and [Cormier] even agrees.”
Jones reportedly prefers to fight Cormier, but if the UFC is unwilling to book the fight Jones may be left without any other choice but to put his name on the dotted line.
In the first meeting between the two fighters, Jones was pushed to his limit by Gustafsson and squeaked out a decision win.
If the two meet again, it will be one of the most highly anticipated rematches in recent memory — yes, even more so than Ronda Rousey vs. Miesha Tate and Anderson Silva vs. Chris Weidman.
We will just have to sit back and wait to see who gets the call next.
