Joey Logano says Nascar safer than NFL

Nascar drivers, as a unit, are not one to hold their tongue and that includes Joey Logano who said today that Nascar is safer than playing in the NFL.

The young driver, who recently watched a live Detroit Lions practice came away shocked by the physical nature of the game, leading him to suggest that he’d feel much safer in a race car.

“I’m glad I’m in a race car (when I crash),” Logano said with a laugh, according to DetroitLions.com. “These guys get hit a lot harder than a race car does. Obviously, we take some big hits in cars, but the safety in our sport has improved a lot. Look at the seats, the helmets, the belts — it keeps improving.

“Not that it doesn’t in football. I think it does, too. We take a hit maybe once in every 15 races or so on average. These guys are taking hits on every play. I feel my sport’s a lot safer.”

So does Logano have a point? In a way, yes. In a way, no, simply because both sports come with significant injury risks.

Neither is exactly on the ‘safe’ side, though thankfully both leagues have put in hefty amounts of safety measures over the years as new technology becomes available. That said, both Nascar and the NFL give us scary situations rather frequently, just in different forms.

Hitting a concrete wall going 200 miles per hour is no fun task, but on the same token the impact felt by a 200 pound man rushing into a 250 pound man isn’t exactly comfortable either.
