With the Los Angeles Kings in the Stanley Cup Finals once again, it is only fitting that the Great One would be in the house for the ceremonial puck drop.

This is the first time that the Kings have met the New York Rangers in the Finals. Both teams have defied the odds to reach this point, with the Rangers making an especially inexplicable run through the Eastern Conference Finals. As far as the NHL is concerned, this seems a fitting ending to a thrilling playoffs, especially if it is a good series.

With hockey fighting for attention over the last number of years, hard to even find on TV sometimes, there has been something of a resurgence in its popularity with these playoffs. The NFL it is not, but people are noticing a bit more thanks to a number of seven game series and exciting finishes.

Or maybe that’s just the “living in Minnesota” talking. Could be me.

But if it is the case that more people are paying attention, then a match-up between two big markets is a pretty nice outcome. The buzz in New York about the Rangers is especially noteworthy as things get underway.

When you think hockey, one of the first names you think of is Gretzy. Who better to drop that puck?
