Finishing your fantasy baseball week with a gem off the waiver wire is one of the most satisfying ways to seize the victory in your head-to-head matchup or in a category you’ve been competing in all week. With a full Sunday of MLB action on tap for the end of the first week of June, there are 30 teams in action with some very nice options to snag if you need a starting pitching boost to finish the week strong.

Whenever your rotation needs help, check out my starting pitcher pickups available each afternoon here on Fansided (archive here). My recent results are available on the final slide of this post, but since I took a few days off the numbers are just getting underway for this mont. My choices are always available in at least half of ESPN leagues, and each player’s ownership percentage is included in parentheses after their team name. I also include a risk and reward ranking for each pick on a scale of 1-5 with five being the most risk and the most reward.

Here are the pickups to target for Sunday success:

Henderson Alvarez-Miami Marlins (14.2%)

Alvarez is definitely the top option coming off his third complete game shutout of the season. Those three games are his only three wins as he comes into Sunday’s start just 3-3 despite a 2.62 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP.

In his last three outings, Alvarez hasn’t allowed a single run while issuing just two walks and holidng the Rays, Phillies, and Nationals scoreless for a total of 21 innings with just 17 hits.  Alvarez isn’t an elite strikeout option, but he has been dealing and is in a good matchup as he and the Fish close out their series against the Cubs.

Alvarez takes on Jake Arrieta in the series finale, and facing the Cubs lineup should lead to another good outing even if he can’t keep up his scoreless streak.  Alvarez hasn’t gotten as much attention as his numbers seem to merit, so if you can add him for Sunday he should be your top target.

Risk-2, Reward-5
