Triple Crown 2014: Re-watch Affirmed win in 1978 (Video)

We have a chance on Saturday to see one of the hardest feats in sports achieved as California Chrome will take to the track in the Belmont Stakes, looking to win that coveted Horse Racing Triple Crown following victories at the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes.

In those first two victories, California Chrome was clearly the superior horse on the track, especially coming down the stretch. And that’s good, because it’s going to take a dominant horse to become the sport’s first Triple Crown winner since 1978.

Yes, that’s how long it’s been since a horse swept all three races, and that horse in 1978 was named Affirmed. At the time, I’m sure there were people watching that didn’t imagine it would take this long before we even come close to seeing another Triple Crown winner, not realizing just how special Affirmed and that chase was.

Watch in the video below and you can re-live Affirmed’s magical journey to the Triple Crown championship, and maybe even compare some bits and pieces to the run that Chrome is on that they’re hoping ends with the next winner.

Horse Racing might not be for everyone, and that’s okay, buy you cannot argue how prestigious the prizes are in the sport.

Saturday at the Belmont Stakes, we could be dealt a heavy reminder of that if California Chrome can become get right next to Affirmed on the illustrious list of Triple Crown winners.
