As the UFC Fight Night 42 main card rolled on from the Tingley Coliseum in Albuquerque, New Mexico, another lightweight contest took center stage. This time, it was Rafael dos Anjos vs. Jason High taking place inside of the Octagon.
Dos Anjos entered the bout ranked No. 5 in the UFC lightweight division, while High was looking to make a serious jump up the rankings by pulling off the upset in his lightweight debut.
It wouldn’t be easy, but High is always a game opponent and was ready for the challenge.
Round 1: High used his athleticism and strength out of the gate to plant dos Anjos on his back. By dropping to lightweight, High is a very big man in his weight class and he was able to use that to impose his will on the mat. After trying to get back to his feet, dos Anjos used a kimura attempt as a sweep. Once the fight was back on its feet, dos Anjos was landing some heavy shots to the body. After a wild exchange, dos Anjos was able to change levels and land a takedown of his own to finish out the round in top position. Dos Anjos stopped his attack to let the referee know High was grabbing his shorts, but a fighter is allowed to hold their own shorts as a line of defense so there was no foul committed.
Round 2: After some heavy exchanges, we got to interrupt the action with yet another eye poke. Dos Anjos wasted no time keeping the pressure on when the action was restarted, but that aggression opened dos Anjos up and High was able to land a takedown to temporarily slow down the pace of the fight. Dos Anjos landed a strong straight left that backed High up against the cage and dos Anjos planted High on his back. Dos Anjos searched for a guillotine choke, but High was able to counter and moved to dos Anjos’ back. After a wild exchange, dos Anjos landed a huge shot that left High on queer street and dos Anjos pounced on the opportunity to finish the fight with some ground-and-pound that appeared to be to the back of the head.
